Graduation Year Class of 1982
Date of Passing Dec 30, 2003
About Our son Chuck was born on March 14, 1963. He had 2 sisters 15 & 11 years old also born at Memorial Hospital. Chuck was a patient during the 1st grade for 3 weeks diagnosed with rheumatic fever and nephritis. He was released to home to recuperate with periods of bed rest and low sodium intake for 5 months. He recovered with good health and returned to 2nd grade with help from Miss Will’s a teacher who tutored him.

In 1996 in the Emergency Room, Chuck was diagnosed with a tumor on the brain. It was recommended that he go to Saint V’s in Toledo for further treatment. The tumor was malignant and a second tumor on the pelvis was removed 6 weeks later. That was found early and he only had radiation for the tumor on the brain. During his treatments he worked a half day and took the radiation in the afternoon.

In 2003, the yearly examination showed the brain tumor had returned. Dr. Healy from St. V’s operated, but it was found he had a 3rd kind of cancer in the bone, spine, and lung. He was taking a pill for chemotherapy. He continued to work as long as possible and by July retirement was seriously decided upon. During this time he still had sick leave given to him by the men in the Guards.

Hospice of Memorial Hospital, his wife Grace, and his sister Sally Grubb, R.N. were his caregivers. As a young boy, Chuck attended Atkinson School and graduated from Ross High in 1982. He was active in the school newspaper, “The Chatter” and made many life time friends from that association. His Junior year (1981), he and a friend, Robert Bliss joined the Ohio National Guard. Chuck on the delayed option. He was employed full-time with the Guards as E7 with 22 years. He was Commander and active with the Sons of the Legion #121 Fremont, The Boy Scouts, and attended the First United Church of Christ.

As an adult he taught Sunday School. He was also in charge of the Security at the Presidential Center Group 612th Guards 1st Enactment and continued this for several more years. He didn’t dwell on his health or talk of death. He was living with his cancer.

He was always a humorous and loving person with a smile to the end on December 30, 2003. He was buried with Military Honors and at the mortuary the General of the Ohio National Guard presented his wife and children the highest honor award for his service to his country. We’ve lived close to the hospital for 29 years. Chuck moved to Siler Street so we feel you’re like a neighbor. We can walk to the Center. I’ve had physical therapy and was very satisfied with my results.

Chuck and I have had so many fun times, I have thought of him over the years, wondering what if? I was devastated when I heard the news from my Mother that he passed, I wished I was able to be there for his family in there time of need. I will always remember the shaving cream message I found on my car at 7:30 am and how I used peanut butter on his windshield and wrote "revenge" in shaving cream on his car to get him back. I remember the long hours we spent talking and laughing. Even the times we sat in a car and Sue's house. I pray, that he is making everyone in heaven laugh, too.
