Jim Crawford

Class of 1956

Jim Crawford is nominated to Fort Hill "Hall of Fame" for his accomplishments on football tean at Fort Hill in 1953-55 where he was a star running back, team's kicker and outstanding defensive player. He made the All-City and All Md State team.
He accepted a scholarship to Miami where he was switched to nose guard on defense. His nickname was "Ernie". He was chosen
to pay in the North-South game in his senior year.
While at Miami he won Cumberland's "Dapper Dan Award" for
doing most to publicise Cumberland, Md.
After graduation he started his coaching career at High Point in Prince Georges County as assistant football coach and head basketball coach. He took this team to State Championship game.
He then moved on to coach football at a new first year school,
Friendly High of Prince Georges County. He secured most of
his team's equipment from a old Cumberland acquaintance,
Roy Lester, Coach at Md U.
He coached Friendly for 20 years winning 3 State Championships
and was once named Metropolitan Coach of Year by the Washington Post.
Cancer took his life in his early 50's and Friendly High named the football field after him in memorium.
