About Me	Still a naval officer in a very real way--active in national affairs, studying Spanish, French and Latin--I did not make it to where the Severn Meets the Tide in Maryland but by the Grace of God they still made me an ensign of the surface line (something like maybe in my last life I was OOD on His Majesty's battle cruiser REPRISE (this is fiction, of course) when she opened up with her main batteries against Admiral von Hipper's German battle cruisers before dawn on May 31, 1916 at the beginning of the Battle of Jutland. The British Grand Fleet's advance battle cruisers were under the command of Admiral Sir David Beatty. Admiral Sir John Jellicoe was to the north with the heavy battleships and in overall command of the British fleet. Beatty engaged the Germans in a running battle moving north in which he lost two of his battle cruisers, but was unable to draw the Germans into the guns of the main British fleet. The High Seas Fleet under the overall command of Admiral Scheer withdrew but both sides claimed victory. The Germans were never again able to make such a salient on the high seas after the Battle of Jutland. I identify with naval history to a degree after coming of age in the aftermath of WWII near and on the U.S. Naval Air Station at Pensacola and in its schools and library. We all seem to be programmed into the pathways of our lives from the beginning. Mine has been very mixed and really unanticipated, and like the Energizer Bunny, I just kept going and going.
