Class of 1961

I will submit a photograph of a coin showing King Offa of Mercia who would have been seated in London in or about the year 800 AD. I am interested in this history and recommend it. He was probably a Danish king and would have spoken that language, and would have known the King of Denmark and his family. The "Danegeld" was the large portion of England ruled by the Danish people, which eventually succumbed to conquest by the Anglo-Saxons. These years are really not the "dark ages" at all, and are diligently studied by saints in Britain who view these people as their ancestors--all of them. Pensacola is a place which for some reason is really unaware of its own history and that of our peoples generally, whomever we are. I took Spanish at PJC after high school and after study in later years can write fluently to people in Spain and Mexico. I want you to know about the Spanish general named Bernardo Vincente, Compte de Galvez, whose forces captured Pensacola from the British during the American Revolution in about 1781 in May. His soldiers wore white uniforms because of the heat at that time of year. Galvez did wonders for the American cause, captured British bases on the lower Mississippi and refused to turn over an American blockade runner to the British when he was governor of New Orleans. He actually sent supplies to George Washington up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to Pittsburgh, where they then went overland to the colonial army. His portrait is in the Capitol building in Washington, DC. You can view that on www.wikipedia.com. Also see "The Battle of Pensacola." I think that it's more appropriate to communicate my interests to you than my biography. I was not really close to anybody at Escambia although like most of us I do remember a lot of names of classmates and teachers. I would rather share with you these interests and perhaps have them communicated to others in that area where I grew up. I am basically a teacher of English and history, so that is what I have done here. Best wishes to you all at this late period in our lives. WAS
