Below is a note I sent to RaeLynn yesterday, giving her some details to include in a message she wanted to post to the Strauss Performers webpage - I hope this helps to fill in some information for you. The upshot is that my dad's passing was as gracious and as gentle as he was - it was terrible to lose him, but it was rewarding to see him pass as he'd always lived - surrounded by nothing but love. You are of course very welcome to share this sad news with everyone who cared for Arnie, thanks. - Debbie (Zimbelman '69) Hirsch
Arnie has been struggling with various health issues for some time, but until now he’s always bounced back. He was so happy to be able to attend the Strauss Festival one more time this summer.
Several weeks ago Arnie was admitted to Kaiser, and despite many efforts to get him back on track, this time his problems were not solvable.
Throughout everything, Arnie’s active mind remained alert, and his always lovable personality never changed.
On Friday Arnie made the decision that he wanted to begin hospice care. That afternoon he returned to his happy ‘home’ this past year, Autumn Grove Senior Living in Elk Grove, to let go under Autumn Grove’s exceptional and loving care.
On Saturday he rallied, and enjoyed a lovely afternoon outside on the patio in the sunshine, playing games and enjoying the company of family and friends.
Sunday he rested peacefully, surrounded by MORE family and friends.
That night he began his ‘transition’, and on Monday afternoon he passed very peacefully, in no distress at all, while his family sang his favorite song, Edelweiss [this is true!! - Dad seemed to take his last breath while we were singing to him!]
During his final days, Arnie’s daughters entertained him with photos and video clips and music from the many Strauss Festivals that have brought him so much joy and meaning over the years. Arnie’s family extends thanks from the bottoms of all of our hearts to everyone in the incomparable Strauss Family for making the beautiful Strauss vision come true for one of the world’s finest gentlemen.

Mr. Zimbelman was an EGHS Hall of Famer! He was an inspiration to us history geeks. Thank you for the memories of really fun US History classes in junior year, 1969. Denise

I took every history class he offered just to hear his lectures. Mr. Zimbelman could tell a story like no other. Ran into him years later at Elk Grove Park. He regaled my sons with stories of local history. Thank you for the memories, sir. You will be missed.
