Class of 1957
Air Force, 4 Years
Just turned 17 and had to quit high school in my senior year and go into the service. Was told that I could complete a course in american government and then when I turned 18 I would get my diploma from ECHS. Did so and notified ECHS of such. They wrote back and notified me that they had changed their requirements and that I would have to complete a course in senior goals (where you discussed what you would do after high school). Thought that was a little ridiculous since I still had most of a 4 year enlistment in the Air Force to complete. I also had begun classes at night at Univ. of Alaska. When I finished 15 semester units there I sent ECHS the transcript and asked if I could now get my high school diploma since I had a semester of college. I got it but since I had a demanding job in the Air Force (in addition to attending college at night) ECHS records show that I was in the class of 59 instead of 57. Didn't like the military much and missed all of those pretty girls at ECHS. In Alaska (Elmendorf AFB) being in the military didn't impress the single girls much. Even the ones that were military dependents weren't allowed to date us in most cases. Downtown (mainstreet) was most all bars and the GI's main recreation was getting drunk there. In those days (in peacetime) no one ever thanked you for your (military) service. It was considered your patriotic duty to serve and you would be incarcerated if you did not do so. I admit I do appreciate it when now in more recent times I hear "thank you for your service."

CPT Joseph William Schultz
Class of 1993
Army, 10 Years
A Living Memorial to Captain Joseph William Schultz
Out on patrol, Joe always rode in the first HUMVEE, because of his core belief in ‘leading from the front.’ As a rule, he never asked his men to do anything that he himself wouldn’t do. To both those who served with him and knew him outside the military, Joe brought tremendous devotion to protecting and caring for those around him.
Joseph served two tours in Iraq, first with the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), 82nd Airborne Division, and later as the G-2 advisor, 10th Iraqi Army Division. After receiving his Green Beret, Joe was assigned to Co. C, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) where he served as Detachment Commander of Special Forces Operational Detachment – Alpha 3333. On May 29, 2011, Joseph was killed in action in the Wardak Province, Afghanistan.
The Captain Joseph House Foundation is dedicated to carrying on Joe’s spirit by providing comfort and care to the families of the Fallen, as they honor, respect, and remember their loved one.
A plaque in Joseph's memory is located on the north wall of the quad at El Camino.
