Two men died Friday afternoon when the brakes apparently failed on a garbage truck owned by an Easton hauling company, sending it careening across a yard and into an embankment in Williams Township.
State police identified one of the dead as the driver, William G. Swint, 46, of Easton, but they withheld the name of the second because his family had not been notified. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene by an employee of the Northampton County coroner's office, which will release the causes of their deaths following autopsies today at Easton Hospital.
A second passenger, Michael Corey Swint, 23, of Easton, survived with moderate injuries, state police at Belfast said.
The 1988 Mack truck is owned by Swint's Hauling & Disposal Service, a small family-owned and operated hauling company based out of Herman M. and Evangeline Swint's home on South Side.
Herman Swint and his father, Tobias Swint, founded the company around 1950, according to information provided for Tobias Swint's obituary in 1990.
A relative at the Swint home on Folk Street Friday evening said the family was not prepared to comment about the accident, which was reported at 2:50 p.m.
State police tentatively blamed the the accident on faulty brakes, but the accident remains under investigation.
The truck was heading north on Bougher Hill Road, descending toward the T-intersection at Coffeetown Road when it apparently lost its brakes, state police reported.
The truck left no skid marks as it passed through a stop sign, crossed Coffeetown Road and continued 300 feet down a sloped residential yard.
The truck knocked down a row of ornamental trees lining a driveway and hit the corner of a garage before crossing Coffeetown Creek and hitting an embankment on the opposite side.
Williams Township firefighters and fire police assisted state police at the scene, and emergency medical squads from Easton, Riegelsville and Williams Township responded.
A hospital helicopter landed at Route 611 and Coffeetown Road, but it left without picking up anyone.
State police spent nearly four hours investigating the accident before the truck was removed.
