Received my commission as a 2LT through the ROTC program at UT. Entered active duty in July 1969 as an ammunitions supply officer in the Ordnance Corps. Trained at Aberdeen Proving Ground and Redstone Arsenal. Served for three years in Germany and Viet Nam. Received my call to ministry through an Army chaplain while in Germany. Left active duty in 1972 to begin my seminary education at the Divinity School of Vanderbilt University. Graduated in 1975 and was ordained in the United Methodist Church in 1976. Re-entered the Army as a Chaplain in 1977 and served Fort Knox, KY, Aschaffenburg, GY, Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, Okinawa, Japan, and Fort Dix, NJ. Retired in 1994
