About Me You don't have to be dead to move towards the Light... srummcb@gmail.com My father was Gene Rumrill, founder of the Sierra Institute program, an innovative Wilderness Studies program first through UC Santa Cruz, later moved to Humboldt State Univ. His parents were Dorothy Seward, a descendent of American statesman William Henry Seward, and Lester E. Rumrill Sr. of Madison, South Dakota. My mother is Helen Peterson Rumrill, a professional musician, who later changed her name to Erika Barrows. Her parents were Arthur Peterson, a descendant of Swedish immigrants and Beulah Clover Peterson, a descendent of the Wilkendorf family who settled in Yolo County, Ca. during the 1850's Gold Rush. The story I hear is that my ancestor was a lesser son of a German noble family in Berlin, who left Germany to travel first to Austrailia, then to California by way of the South Pacific. It must have been a fascinating journey. I was raised primarily in Pacific Grove, California. In 1966 my family moved to Oahu, Hawaii where we lived until fall of 1971 when we returned to Pacific Grove. I graduated from the Community Centered High School, a small public alternative school in 1973. In 1976 I married Jeffrey McBrayer, my good friend from my high school days. I was employed in a variety of positions, first as a baker, later as a typesetter and graphic artist. I graduated from Monterey Peninsula College in 1978. Our daughter Tamerin was born in 1979, and son Brenden in 1985. In 1987 we moved north to Arcata, Calif, where I worked as a typesetter and began attending Humboldt State University. In 1989 Jeff was transferred by his employer to Medford, Oregon, where I did a year on exchange with Southern Oregon State College, including an internship in city planning with the City of Medford. In 1990 we moved to the Placerville area, where I continued my career in city planning. In 1993 we relocated our family for the final time to Crescent City, California, home of Redwood National Park. I worked as a city planner for the City of Crescent City for 5 years, and then another few years for the City of Grants Pass, Oregon while Jeffrey completed his degree and credential to become a teacher. In 1998 I was called to a position as development director and grant writer with the Community Assistance Network, a faith-based food and human services organization in Crescent City. This work was / is near and dear to my heart. Developing a new local economy for a community populated by the families of former loggers and fisherman remains a special concern. At the same time I worked as a private planning consultant for a variety of clients. I served on the Del Norte County Planning Commission from 2001 through 2003, including some time as it's Chairman. In 2003 a long-term illness caused me to withdraw from active practice. I'm currently taking on a few volunteer projects to see how they go. In 2001 I was blessed with a good son-in-law and my first grandchild. Since then three more grandchildren have joined my family. My husband Jeffrey passed away in 2007, and is much missed by his family and friends. I now split my time between Grants Pass, Oregon and Crescent City, California, and am open to what life will bring. Having been privileged to live in some of the most beautiful spots on this planet I know it's a wonderful life. I am sincerely grateful for my f...(read more)
