Benton "Benny" Bernard

I joined the Louisiana Army National Guard in 11th grade, and went to basic training in the summer of 1980. After I graduated, I went back to AIT (advanced individual training) at Fort Benning, GA and became infantry qualified. I was assigned to the local National Guard based in Crowley (Det.1, Co. B, 2/156th Mechanized Infantry). In the 6 years I was in, we were deployed twice; for the flood in the Spring of 1980, and in the flood caused by tropical system Juan, I believe in the fall of 1985. My primary job was a radiotelephone operator (RTO), but I eventually became the unit armorer.

I served 8 years active duty in the US NAVY. I was stationed in Yokosuka Japan for 5 years, serving aboard two Aircraft carriers (USS INDEPENDENCE CV-62 and the USS KITTY HAWK CV-63). I did two deployments to Iraq during my time aboard the carriers. While on deployment I earned my Air warfare pin. Upon completion of my sea duty, I was on shore duty for the next three years at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. While deployed to a marine detachment I earned my Fleet Marine Force pin. I completed my active duty on October 15, 2003 finishing as a Second Class Petty Officer (ABF2 AW/FMF)

After basic and advance Infantry training, my first duty station was in Germany, then in Ft. Lewis Wa and then Korea and Ft Benning again. I then ETS from the Army and came back to La, joining the National Guard. Over the past 22 yrs I've held several various positions and deployed many times. Now I am a recruiter for the Guard and a mentor with the Acadia parish high schools. I operate out of Crowley High with the intent of paving a way for our young generation and helping them understand they have a future.

I cross trained into the aircrew field and spent my last 16 years in the Air Force with the 3rd ALSq. at Dover AFB, De. flying all across the US, Canada, Cent/South America, Africa, Europe the Middle East, Russia and the Pacific. Memorable events were participation in Operation Urgent Fury (Grenada), Operation Just Cause (Panama), Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm (Kuwait) and Operation Joint Endeavor (Bosnia) before retiring. Made many life long friend and experiences that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.

Traveled to Spain four times but mainly stayed here in the states for my time in. I was on two aircraft carriers and a sub tender then i decided i needed to spend more time on the beach where the girls were, so that;s what i did, California, Florida Virginia, and south Texas is where i finished my time in the Navy.
