Coast Guard, 3 Years

After receiving a letter from the US Marines while finishing my senior year, about 17 of my male classmates were chosen to be Helicopter pilots! Not my choosing!, so with my buddy Garry Guenther we joined the US Coast Guard. My first duty station was a 213 foot Medium Endurance Cutter called the "YOCONA" docked in the middle of Astoria Oregon on the Columbia River. This ship was at sea over 270 days a year patrolling the coast of Washington and Oregon mainly for Search and Rescue and US Fishery Patrols. June - September we went to Kodiak Alaska and patrolled the entire Aleutian chain and part of the Bearing Sea. Spent my last year in Seatlle WA, and worked on a small inland water body tender. Surfed Northern Oregon with a fine crew out of Santa Cruz"s Freeline Design Surf Shop. Cold water, big nasty seas, salty sailors, tons of rain and Job Corp girls...
