Louise Smith Mathews, 87, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, leaving behind a legacy of creativity, dedication, and love.

Louise was born and raised in Yancey County before moving with her family to Asheville. She was the daughter of the late Arnold Smith and Gladys Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Mathews, Jr., and her niece, Rebekah Woody.

She is survived by her brothers, Bill Smith (Marietta) and Mackey Smith, both of Asheville; two nieces, Angela Smith of Asheville and Laura Smith Woody (Darby) of Morganton; one great-niece, Deleah Woody (Chris); two great-great-nephews, Trenton and Kanaan, also of Morganton; and three stepsons, John Mathews (Teresa) of Weaverville, Wade Mathews (Barbara) of Mississippi, and Geoff Mathews of Texas. She also leaves behind many close and cherished friends.

Louise graduated from Erwin High School in 1957 and went on to build a long and successful career in cosmetology. After attending cosmetology school in Asheville and completing advanced training in Jacksonville, Florida, she fulfilled her entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating a beauty school in downtown Asheville. She later opened Continental Hair Fashions, the salon she proudly operated for many years.

Throughout her career, Louise formed lasting friendships with her loyal clients and fellow cosmetologists. Her chair was more than a place for hairstyling—it was a space of connection, transformation, and trust, where clients quickly became friends.

Louise was a wonderful sister, aunt, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 in the chapel of Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home and Cremation Center is honored to serve Louise's family.
