About Charles Hilliard Sprouse, Jr., 80, of Asheville, NC passed away at his home surrounded by family on December the 26th. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marjorie Sprouse. Hilliard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janis Hughes Sprouse, by his daughter, Kim Terry, and husband Chris, of Inman, SC, and his son, Joel Sprouse, and wife Dana, of Charlotte. Hilliard was the grandfather of five grandchildren (Megan, Dustin, Miranda, Mallory, and Caleb) and four great-grandchildren (Avery, Camden, Ella, and Everleigh). In addition, Hilliard is survived by brother-in-law and closest friend, David Hughes, and brother-in-law, Jim Hughes, both of Asheville.



Above all, Hilliard loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and was a devoted and loyal husband, father, and friend. A 1962 graduate of Clyde A. Erwin High School where he lettered in both baseball and basketball, Hilliard was a proud American and veteran of the United States Air Force, serving tours in both Vietnam and Korea. Hilliard retired from Square D Company after 33 years in various roles and management positions and was also a huge positive influence in the Erwin sports community for over 25 years as a coach and mentor.



The Sprouse family would like to express our sincerest appreciation to the entire team at the VA Hospital in Oteen, with special recognition to the incredible staff in the ICU. Your dedication to not only Hilliard, but to our entire Veteran community, is unsurpassed and truly valued. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.



Visitation will be held Thursday, January 4th, from 11:30am – 1:30pm, at Penland Family Funeral Home in Swannanoa, followed by a private family interment service at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
