Events Emma J. Schmid, 80, a missionary and former Alden resident, died Tuesday (Oct. 1, 2002) in Essa Flory Hospice Center in Lancaster, Pa., after a long illness.

Known as "Jackie," she was born Emma Jacqueline Sievenpiper. She graduated from Parker High School in Clarence and Buffalo Bible Institute. She then completed a missionary assignment in Kentucky, and attended a post-graduate course for Bible translation through Wycliff Fort Wayne Mission.

She met her husband, John, while studying at Buffalo Bible Institute. After he graduated, he began a missionary service to Haiti, West Indies, in 1943, where she later joined him to be married in 1945. She served in Haiti for 38 years with UFM International and in Florida for seven years working with Haitian Christians.

Her missionary activities included leadership training women's ministries, managing a Christian bookstore and writing Bible lessons. She was also a member of Millgrove Bible Church for many years.

Her husband died in 1977.

She is survived by three sons, David of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Melvin of Haverhill, Mass., and Randall of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two daughters, Joanne of Hollywood, Fla., and Debi Perry of St. Cloud, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
