Events On his first day back in camp after spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roland K. Beard of Main street, Clarence, 1st Lt. Lincoln H Beard, 26, was killed in an airplane crash last Monday, July 31, 1944, at Camp Davis, N.C. Word of his death was received by his parents.
Lt. Beard received his training at Maxwell Field, Ala., and Jackson, Miss., and was awarded his wings at Blytheville, Ark., where he had received his advanced and twin engine training. He served for some time at Liberty Field, Ga., and was transferred from there to Camp Davis.
The Lieutenant was born January 14, 1918, in Buffalo. He attended grammar school in Williamsville, and when the family moved to Clarence he attended Parker High School, receiving his diploma in 1937. He enlisted on January 22, 1942, after attending Pratt Institute of Brooklyn for two years. On May 8, 1942, he was married to Miss Lois Heist of Clarence.
In addition to his wife and parents, Lt. Beard is survived by a nine-month-old son; two brothers, Sgt. Irving W. Beard at Jackson, Miss., and Sgt. Roland K Beard, Washington, D. C., and three sisters, Mrs. Karl T. Krehbiel Jr.., Clarence Center; Mrs. James McKay Jr., Cheektowaga, and Miss Norma Anne Beard, at home.
The Lieutenant’s wife and son had just returned with the Lieutenant to Camp Davis after a week’s visit here when Lt. Beard was home on a furlough.
