HAZEL GILMARTIN HAUSE, 103, a former Detroit Public Schools teacher, died Monday at her home in Royal Oak.
Mrs. Hause taught at elementary schools, including Tilden and Thirkell. She also had taught in Charlevoix and South Bend, Ind., before moving to Detroit during the Depression with her late husband, Basil. She had lived in Royal Oak for 37 years.
She was born in East Jordan and graduated from Charlevoix High School. She received a teaching certificate from what's now Eastern Michigan University.
"She had taught poetry in her early teaching career," said her son Gerald, and she enjoyed writing poetry.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Haus is survived by a daughter, Barbar Joan Reynolds; a sister; a brother; six grandchildren, and 13 great-grand children.
Funeral services will be held at p.m. today at First United Methodist Church of Birmingham, 1589 W. Maple. Burial will be in Petoskey.
