John Grove
Class of 1960
Air Force, 20+ Years
Note: Following is information provided by Jim Sirrine, '62, about his friend, John Grove, '60, whom many of you know:
John Grove (Class of 1960) and I grew up in the country together. I know his brothers Floyd, Ed and Bill (Updyke Rd). John flew helos in Viet Nam and I understand was damn good at it. He retired as a Major U S A F.
When he retired (Fort Walton Beach) he dedicated his life to scrounging up used but usable materials that could be sent to developing countries and be put to good use. He sent plane loads of stuff to Honduras! The extent to which he did this work was not well known because John never bragged about what he did, he just did it. I've been told he had several storage buildings full of 'stuff'.
I say had because John died about 5 years ago. I went to his funeral service at Arlington. Very impressive on the surface, but it was a very interesting day. Friends and military from FL were there. I heard about John's benevolence first hand. I talked to flying buddies who told about how he landed a helo without a tail rotor. It's next to impossible. When the Air Force Chief of Staff (Bernie Swartz) showed up, I was blown away. He and John flew together in sister squadrons. And all of a sudden, how John was able to get so much stuff flown to Honduras became crystal clear. It IS who you know.
Leroy Manor,(a new acquaintance of Jim's), is 91 (years young), and a Retired General USAF. Leroy was very well acquainted with John and his work. He knows Gen. Swartz. "He just retired, you know?" And it went on. I promised to send pictures of the funeral. Get more info by looking up Air Commandos and John Grove school in Honduras.
