Class of 1967

Where the Wall failed
An advertisement in the local paper read
Wanted a young girl for companionship to an American woman in the U.S.
a tourist had purchased trinkets during her visit to Guatemala
but they did not satisfied her curiosity
that a real live native could
so the purpose of the Ad
the woman was a teacher in the Seabeck elementary school in Wa State (closed 2008)
the man, her husband, a retired U.S. Army Veteran
my cousin had heard
so the purpose of the phone call
tell your friends she suggested
what do you mean I said
I will apply
and so I did
the American family sent a contract letter to the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala
Central Kitsap School District Superintendent should have been
the one to approved the International student I-20 form
I worked to earn money for the airline ticket
I arrived the 1st day of November 1966 I was 17 years old
I remember the sign that read
"Gone hunting" in the window of the business to the right
as we entered the road to Anderson Hill
the contract letter, listed the host's job description, the number of dollar figures in their bank account
and their promise to look after me
but after a short visit, the school year came to an end
I was given notice on Thursday eve just before graduation
come Saturday morning
I was left with suitcase in hand in the corner of Highway 99 and Denny Way in Seattle
How did you feel the councelor asked me
when you realized
she wasn't coming back and you had no resources
she never notified my mother of her intent
I was 18 years old I was homeless I was alone!
I begged for a few days stay in the apt of a Seattle resident
but no one acquainted with my situation
bothered to call Children Protective Services (CPS)
no-one bothered to call Immigration & Naturalization Service (INS)
not the City of Seattle police officer and his family that befriended me
not the Central Kitsap County school staff that looked after me during her absences
not the Olympic Community College professor, her husband
no-one took responsibility to help me
a young girl, a foreigner in their country
get back home
so here I am
Central Kitsap High School just celebrated our 50th year reunion
no-one understood that the requirements of the INS
is a contract
with legal requirements to be fulfilled
on both sides
the door must swing
in and out
