| About Me | Were you in the military? What were your rank and serial number? Were you drafted or did you enlist? What was the first you saw of the service—The enlistment center? The year was 1945. I was just graduating from highschool and I was three months away from my 18th birthday. Jim Powers, a friend of his buddies, and mine were going over to San Francisco to take the national test to go to the Coast Guard Academy. “Why don’t you go with us and take the test too?” “Yeah…right…like I could qualify nationaly.” Well we went over and took the test. And soon thereafter I got a letter from the Coast Guard saying I had been selected to go to the Academy! There was a lot of paperwork to be filled out and they needed a copy of my Birth Certificate. By the time I sent away to Boise and received a copy back a month had gone by. I had missed the class. “Not to worry…there are always a lot of drop outs at the beginning. You can enlist and we will send you to boot camp in New York..and when there is a drop out we will send you up to the Academy .” That sounded good and I enlisted. Germany surrendered while I was on the train to New York. I spent several days at boot camp while the CG tried to decide what to do with us. Because Japan had surrendered by that time, and the services were trying to send the boy’s home ASAP, and I was aboard a ship, it only took a short time before I was sent home and discharged. From start to finish I was only in the service for 9 month...(read more) |
