| About Me | Local Ventura jobs, Ventura JC, and Navy - Navy - Navy (27 years, 2 months, 9 days). 3 aircraft carriers (Midway, Independence, Kitty Hawk), 1 cruiser (Bunker Hill), 1 numbered fleet flagship (Blue Ridge - 7th Fleet) - all homeported at Yokosuka, Japan; 1 Admiral's staff afloat (CARRIER GROUP 5 - Indy then crossdecked to Kitty Hawk), 1 Admiral's staff ashore (Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command) - Stennis Space Center, MS), Naval Air Systems Command - Pax River, MD. Traveled from our homeport in Yokosuka, Japan to the North Arabian Sea (Gonzo Station, baby!) (2 regular deployments and 1 emergency deployment in 2 years: 1979 - 1980) with a liberty port visit to Mombasa, Kenya all 3 times; 3 Emergency Deployments to the North Arabian Gulf (1st Gulf War / Operation Southern Watch x2), with liberty port visits to Bahrain and Jebel Ali in the UAE ( too many times to remember); and during my over 9 years of forward deployed sea duty numerous liberty port visits to Thailand (Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket), Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Singapore, Philippines, Guam, Hong Kong, South Korea, Shanghai, China; and Admiral Staff Ashore business trips to Singapore; Istanbul and the Mediterranean seaside resort town of Marmaris, Turkey. Lived and worked many years at Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan - single and married - ashore and afloat - enlisted and a commissioned officer. My first time in "Yoko"? November 1965 as a Navy Brat when my family accompanied my father, a Naval Surgeon, after he received orders to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka. I spent 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades there. Now ask me about my adventures at the U.S. Navy Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during pre-school, nursery school, and kindergarten as a Navy Brat and how my family was one of many families evacuated to the US for a couple of months (back home by Christmas) during the Cuban Missile Crisis! Shellback 6 times (or is it 7?) (Shellback initiation really only once but crossed the equator 6 or 7 times). Numerous recreational scuba qualifications. Personal depth record (shhhh, don't tell anybody) 157' at the Blue Hole in Guam. Dived in the GOO (Gulf of Oman) while on liberty and the carrier was in Jebel Ali, UAE - just south of Dubai. Dubai - what a town! Surfed while it was snowing at Chigasaki Beach on Sagami Bay on the other side of Miura Peninsula from Yokosuka. Surfed perfect 4 to 6 foot typhoon surf over a rock spine (very narrow and long ) just 15 minutes from my off base home in Yokosuka (and, shhhhhh, I played hooky from work to do it!!!)
