| About | Richard Allen Johnson is a U.S. Veteran during the Viet Nam War. Richard Allen "Rich" Johnson 68, Indianapolis, formerly of Brownsburg, passed away July 17, 2016. He was a courier for Special Dispatch and was a U. S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his father Earl R. Johnson. Survivors include his mother Dorothy R. Johnson; sister Marcia (David) Wester; nieces Heather Locke (Shawn Delaney) and Erika Ware (Matt). Richard's obituary states that he played basketball for Brownsburg High School during the 1964 through 1966 seasons, but he actually played basketball from 1961-1965 years. He graduated from Brownsburg High School in May, 1965. Richard's athletisism and camaraderie was top-notch. He ran on the high school's varsity track team all 4 years, plus, ran on the school's inaugral cross country team as a senior. He was awarded as an alternate runner onto the Indiana High School Athletic Association's All-State Cross Country Team member. He played on the school's football team for 2 years as a sophomore and junior. He was a member of the school's Hi-Y club all 4 years and a Booster Club member his Freshman, Sophomore and Senior years. He was awarded onto the Letterman's Club during his sophmore through senior years, too. Richard played basketball for the Brownsburg Bulldogs during the 1961-1965 seasons. He became the only Senior teammate during the 1964-1965 basketball season after a Mid-State Conference loss to Mooresville Pioneers who deated Brownsburg 53-37. It was the Bulldogs' 3rd consecutive loss to begin the season. Three other Senior teammates were dropped from the squad by Coach Rollin Cutter leaving Richard as the only Senior player on the team. Coach Cutter discovered these 3 teammates partied the night before the 3rd game after the consecutive losses. Also, they missed a mandatory Saturday morning practice before the season's 3rd game later that night. Richard Johnson played the Center position and gave 100% effort while he encouraged his teammates, too. Unfortunately, the basketball team's 1964-1965 record, including an IHSAA tournament Brownsburg Sectional first round loss to North Salem, was 1 win and 18 losses. Of these 18 losses, the next 14 games were in a row with 13 to end the season plus an IHSAA loss to North Salem. The streak began Brownsburg High School's longest basketball loosing record (23 games) that lasted from 1964-1965 (season ending 13 plus Sectional loss to North Salem) and continued after Rich's graduation into the first half of the 1965-1966 season, too. Upon graduation, he was employed by the the Brownsburg United States Post Office prior to serving his country. Truly, he was dedicated to his hometown. Richard Allen Johnson is buried in the Brownsburg, Indiana Cemetery. God Bless You Richard. You are missed by your teammates, classmates, club members and those who knew you. |
