Richard's funeral director's obituary stated that he played basketball for Brownsburg High School during the 1964 through 1966 seasons, but he actually played basketball from 1961-1965 years. He graduated from Brownsburg High School in May, 1965.
Richard's athleticism and camaraderie was top-notch. He ran on the Brownsburg High School's varsity track team all 4 years. Plus, he ran on the school's inaugral cross country team as a senior. He was selected by the Indiana High School Athletic Association's as an All-State Cross Country Team member as an alternate runner. He played on the Brownsburg High School's football team for 2 years as a sophomore and junior. He was a 4 year member of the school's Hi-Y club and as a Booster Club member his Freshman, Sophomore and Senior years. For his athleticism in these sports, he was awarded the Lettermen's Club jacket to wear during his sophmore through senior years, too.
Richard played basketball for the Brownsburg Bulldogs during the 1961-1965 season. Three other Senior teammates were dropped from the squad when Coach Rollin Cutter discovered they had partied late into the night before this game. Also, they missed a mandatory Saturday morning practice, too.
That night, Mid-State Conference foe Mooresville Pioneers deated Brownsburg 53-37, another humbling loss. It was the Bulldogs' 3rd consecutive loss to begin the 1964-65 season. Thereafter, Richard was the only Senior teammate for the rest of the 1964-1965 basketball season.
Richard Johnson played the Center position and gave 100% effort while he encouraged his teammates, too. Unfortunately, the basketball team's 1964-1965 record, including the IHSAA tournament Brownsburg Sectional first round loss to North Salem, was 1 win (fourth game) and 18 losses. Plus, an IHSAA Sectional at Brownsburg's Varsity Gym loss to the North Salem Blue Devils. The streak carried into the 1965-1966 season. These losses were Brownsburg High School's longest basketball consecutive loss record of 24 games. that continued into the first half of the 1965-1966 season, after Rich's graduation.
After he graduated, he was employed by the the Brownsburg United States Post Office prior to serving his country in the military. Truly, he was dedicated to his country and hometown.
