Robert C. Class
Class of 1957
Navy, 4 Years
I went to Electricity and Electronics “A” School, at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. 1957/58. I reached pay grade level E5 in 4 years, the highest possible at that time. I was a Second Class Petty Officer ETN2. I served on board USS Mills DER383 for three years.
The Mills was a radar picket ship which operated on the Inner and Outer Barriers of the Rum Line. Our job was to monitor air traffic to and from the United States looking for unscheduled flights. We did 20 pickets, each 35 days in duration in the 3 years on board.
In January 1961 while on a search and recovery mission between Nova Scotia and the Azores Islands looking for a downed MATS aircraft loaded with military dependents, we were caught in a “Perfect Storm”. The storm was the biggest we ever had to ride out. The winds were sustained at 175 MPH gusting 190 MPH and the seas were at 70 ft. +, and the largest roll the ship took was 72 degrees. We rode the storm for twelve hours and none of us thought we would ever see the end of it.
Were we scared? HELL NO! We were Tin Can Sailors.
If I could I would do it all over again. Nothing different
GO NAVY!
