Edward Ira Cannon, 81 of Columbus, Ohio passed away peacefully at Riverside Hospital on April 25, 2012.

Ed was born in Rockland, MA on February 23, 1931.

He was raised on Cape Cod in the Town of Bourne; graduated from Bourne High School and attended William and Mary College in Virginia.

He served in the Army as an engineer during the Korean War.

As a young man he was an avid hunter and marksman.

During his working career, he was a crane and heavy equipment operator (assembled and operated drag lines); was an underwater welder and diver; worked for 20 years as a project manager/superintendent for General Electric on various projects throughout the U.S.; was an explosive demolition expert; and oversaw cleanup of the Cowlitz River after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens.

He enjoyed traveling throughout the country in his private airplane, and he had a way with animals, especially horses.

He was an avid railroad enthusiast and enjoyed attending steam and tractor shows, and he liked riding the train in Nelsonville, Ohio.

He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

Ed was a member of the Community Lodge 684 -F&AM; Community Chapter 227 (RAM); West Gate Council, No 129 R&SM; DeWitt Clinton Lodge in Sandwich, MA; and Mt. Vernon Commandery No. 1, KT.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Joseph and Elizabeth Mabel Simpson Cannon; and sisters Grace and Katherine.

A Celebration of Ed’s Life was held on Friday, May 4, 2012 at the Ohio Cremation and Memorial Society located at 5464 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio.

A Masonic service was with family and friends; remembrances followed.

A reception was held after the service at the Linworth Baptist Church.
