Obituary

John H. Gray Jr. was born in Taunton in 1919. He graduated from Coyle High School in 1937, Providence College in 1942 and completed a Masters & CAGC Program at Boston University.

His first teaching assignment was at Mason Corner School in East Freetown in 1944 and in 1945 he joined the Bourne Public Schools and taught French, Latin and English. For a time he was principal of Bourne High School and its Director of Guidance until his retirement in 1981.

During his tenure in Bourne he served as President of the Bourne Teachers Association and was President of the Cape Cod Principals Association and the Tri-County Principals Association. He enjoyed many good times with other professionals in the Cape & Islands Guidance Association.

John was an active supporter of all BHS sports (especially football, hockey & volleyball) and attended all the Bourne-Wareham football games on Thanksgiving from 1945 through 2009. He missed only one opening kick-off during that time. He followed the BHS hockey program from its inception through 2009. One of his most cherished awards was being inducted into the Bourne High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009. He was an avid fan of the Celtics, Red Sox & New York Giants. He also loved attending the numerous sporting events of his grandsons.

He was a volunteer and local Bourne chairman of the American Cancer Crusade and the Catholic Charities Appeal. John was active in Bourne politics and assisted many local politicians. He was a faithful communicant of St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers a donation in his name can be made to the Bourne Educators Association Scholarship Fund or to the Bourne Food Pantry.

Funeral services were private.
