Class of 1967
Army, 20+ Years

March 1969: Drafted into the US Army

March 1970 – January 1971: Served as an Intelligence Analyst with the Combined Intelligence Center (CIC-V), a multi-national, multi-force team under the Military Advisory Center – Vietnam (MACV). Primary functions were to provide order of battle intelligence to the general officer staff. I also assisted in the writing of General Westmoreland’s memoirs. I traveled the country collecting POW reports, intelligence estimates, etc. Best part of this was I didn’t have to stay in any location for any extended period of time.

19771 – 1972: Had a break in service. Got out of the Army after serving in Viet Nam and stayed out for a year and a half.

1972: Reentered the Army as an Air Defense Artillery missileman in the Nike Hercules missile system. I served on part of a team that provided nuclear defense capabilities in defending 32 metropolitan areas throughout the United States. I scored the highest scores on the Military Occupational Specialty tests (MOS) for Nike Hercules crewmen for three consecutive years. This led to my obtaining a position in the Training Doctrine Command where I conducted critical task inventories, task analysis, evaluation and validation for missile maintenance and operator Skill Qualification Tests and Soldier’s Manuals.

1982: Changed missile systems and became part of a team that tested, validated and integrated the PATRIOT Missile System in the US Army’s arsenal. I also trained and facilitated the deployment of two battalions of PATRIOT missile systems into the US Army Europe command (USAREUR). I also performed as a member of Armed Forces Central Europe (AFCE) Tactical Evaluation Team. This was a multi-national evaluation team that conducted annual evaluations of NATO military forces’ ability to operate and survive in a wartime environment.

While assigned to Europe, I coached one of the first teams to introduce American football in Germany. It was coaching this team that I met and married my wife Sabine.

1988: Attended the US Army Sergeant Major’s Academy. I performed in various positions to include Command Sergeant Major (CSM) for a complex, widely dispersed instructional battalion responsible for the Initial Entry Training for over 9,000 soldiers annually. I trained active, reserve, National Guard, Marine Corps and allied students in seven Air Defense programs of instruction. I also served as a CSM responsible for the health, care and welfare of 150 soldiers with 37 different MOS’s, 70 civilian personnel, in support of operating a training and firing range covering over 1.1 million acres.

1992: Retired from the US Army as a Command Sergeant Major.
