It was the evening of our senior prom. My date was at the door with a wrist bracelet of fresh flowers. I sewed most of my clothes and in Home Economics had made a pink silk one-shoulder full-length chemise with a modest side slit. My mother had not seen my dress. I was saying my goodbyes when my mother realized that I had a bare shoulder exposed. NO, I could NOT leave the house until I had made a shoulder strap for that side. OK... I rushed back to my room and sewing machine. Fortunately, I had a piece of matching fabric, enough to sew a strap (with snaps). I attached it and left quickly with my patient date. After we drove away, I unsnapped the strap and stowed it in my purse and we had a great time at the prom! Of course, I remembered to reattach it when the night was over. : )
P.S. A fond prom memory was one classmate who had a custom dress made like Audrey Hepburn's ballgown in My Fair Lady. Anyone remember who?
