| About Me | "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so." That summarizes a much more certain, profound and liberating truth than anyone realizes. Learning and teaching the details has been the most wonderful unfinished adventure of my life. The first main thing to know about me is that I am a sinner. I’m not proud of that, and I wouldn’t want to go into details; so don’t ask me. The second thing to know about me is that I have a wonderful, all-sufficient Savior, Jesus Christ. I am proud of Him, and there is nothing I enjoy doing more than going into details about Him, for there is no more awesome object of human contemplation, no more satisfying object of human desire, no more delightful object of love (earthly or heavenly) than He; so by all means, ask me, please. In 1950 I was born in Pittsburgh and grew up near there. Sandy, my wife since 1971, grew up on a dairy farm in southwestern Pennsylvania. My parents were born in Wanchese, a small fishing village on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. My dad was a world-class industrial chemist and my mom was a great mother and homemaker. They both taught me many things but mostly they taught me what love looks like. I could not have been more greatly blessed than in having them as my parents. They both passed away in 2000 and 2003. My oldest brother and sister passed away and my nearer brother, a retired Merchant Marine captain, and his wife Barb now live just a few miles away. My first great academic interest was science. Late in high school I determined I wanted to become a research scientist and fight disease; a desire which developed into an interest in veterinary medicine which I pursued through college and into graduate school. Graduate school was interrupted by a call to military service during the closing months of the Viet Nam war. During my service in the Air Force as a veterinary specialist, I was drafted again into the service of my Lord by a call into the ministry, for which I began training when my Air Force enlistment was complete. I served three churches in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Later, to prepare myself to teach others called into the ministry, I entered Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and obtained a PhD in Reformation and Post-Reformation Studies. While pursuing those studies I briefly taught at the Conservative Baptist Seminary of the East and Manna Bible Institute of Philadelphia. I was the pastor of Westminster Congregational Church, for over eleven years, until my family needed me to come to Wanchese to take up the care of my very ill and needy widowed mother. After my mother died in 2003, I began substitute teaching at Manteo High School, where I had the great pleasure and privilege of getting to know many delightful people and develop a few deep and lasting friendships among the students, staff, and community. I was the pastor of the Outer Banks Reformed Fellowship, a small “church plant.” until a few years ago. My dear wife, Sandy, passed away in 2018. I miss her so much. She was severely handicapped with multiple sclerosis. Her condition gradually deteriorated over the years until she became unable to be left alone, and I became privileged to be her full-time care-giver. Since she became so severely dependent back in 2012, I was no longer engaged in preaching or teaching in any capacity except for the snatches of time I write something on Facebook and the precious opportunities which have been afforded to me by the Reformed Congregational Fellowship for the past several years to participate in their annual conference over the internet. Now that she is gone I have had some opportunities for preaching, which I hope to continue doing as long as I can. I know many of you occasionally get to the Outer Banks of NC, so if you do give me a call ...(read more) |
