About Richard Melvin, a native of Sydney, Ohio, and a longtime
resident of Baton Rouge, died Monday, July 23, at Baton Rouge General
Medical Center-Bluebonnet after a short illness. Born Jan. 20, 1929,
he was 78. He was a retired music educator, band director and
substitute teacher in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system.
"Chief" served as band director at Istrouma and Belaire high schools
and also as an elementary school music teacher. After retiring from
the school system he worked as a substitute teacher, especially at
Baton Rouge Magnet High School, where he was also a devoted volunteer
worker with the soccer teams and the speech and debate program. He
came to Baton Rouge after completing a master of arts degree at
Indiana University and serving on the music faculty at Troy (Alabama)
State University.
