Alumni Stories
Sue Peterson Stefonic
Class of 1954
THE HIGH SCHOOL YEARS: Sue was in Future Homemakers 4 years. GAA 3 years. Pep Club her senior year. She was also in Future Teachers of America and Chorus. Sue willed “Mr. Pannuto back to Boston” (that was different).
AFTER HIGH SCHOOL: Sue went to work for Roberts Food for a year after High School as a bookkeeper (Sue says that she was walking by the store one day when Mr. Sargent (Carolyn’s dad) came out and asked her if she wanted a job.) Sue and her first husband Don Verbance (from Glen) ranched between Glen and Wise River. They had two boys (John and Jim) and a girl (Anne). Sue was heavily involved in 4H with her children for about seven years. She divorced Don after 24 years of marriage. Sue worked at Penney’s for a year.
She married Larry Stefonic who’s father owned the Glen Mercantile. She was a housewife, cookie baker and about 4 or 5 other titles. Larry was involved in owning a number of different businesses. These included Lions Candy, a pretzel factory, and a Clarks Cookie Store (are we seeing a pattern here?).
Larry also ran a car lot, and was in real estate in Pocatello. He currently operates an RV lot in Boise.
And I kind of saved the best one for nearly last. Recalling Steve McQueen in Hunter, and Annette O’Toole in Huntress. (Yes I know that they were bail agents - not repo agents - but that was all I could think of.) Anyway, Larry worked as a repo agent, and guess what. Sue went along with him on grabbing cars. She tells some stories that were not unlike the movies. (Don’t we have interesting classmates?)
Sue has been a Mary Kay Sales Director for 5 years, and has been in the business for 24 years. She has team members in ten states. Are you ready for this? Sue is nearing the level where she is looking at getting a PINK CADILLAC!!! I guess everyone will know when she comes to visit in Dillon.
They moved to Boise in 1987 and built their dream house. Sue notes that the only downside is that it makes it a longer trip to visit Montana.
FAMILY: Sue’s oldest son John is a rancher in New Plymouth, ID, and has a boy and a girl. John studied with a high tech company that implants embryos in cattle. John’s wife is Tammy.
Anne is a teacher of gifted students as well as teaching technology. One of Anne’s students recently was in the running for Miss Idaho. Anne husband is Bill and they have one son.
Her youngest son Jim is an equipment operator that specializes in fiber optic installations. Jim also has a son, and lives in Butte, MT.
Reba (Larry’s daughter from his former wife) is a Mom and lives in Olympia, WA with two girls and one boy.
Larry (Jr), is Larry’s son from the former marriage and works as a Vice President of sales for an international computer hardware company and travels all over the world. He has a boy and a girl, and lives in Mukilteo, WA Larry’s wife is Kim.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES: Sue and Larry’s professional lives lend themselves to a lot of interesting travel. As a Mary Kay representative, Sue travels to cities all over the US including places as diverse as Tampa, Nashville, and San Francisco.
Larry’s life in the candy world was one dreams are made of. Imaging having to go to NATIONAL CANDY CONVENTIONS, and always going in the winter. (I used to go to Airport Conventions and the vendors always had lots of cool stuff. BUT just imagine several acres of CANDY!!)
Sue also mentioned travel to other really exotic places such as Hawaii, Monte Carlo, and Mexico. They have also taken cruises to places like the Panama Canal, Alaska, and Costa Rica.
HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES: Sue recalls the High School dances and the variety of activities that we participated in. She liked Mr. Bierrum and Mrs. McCollum. She also liked the football games.
