| About Me | I attended The University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. I worked part-time in the Math Department as a secretary throughout. (My husband was working on a PhD in statistics there and we met.) I received a BA in Speech and Language Pathology and was not that enthralled with the field at that point, so I proceeded to take graduate classes in theatre. I completed all of the credits necessary for a master's degree and still had my comprehensive exams and thesis to finish when we got married and moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan. I worked from 1967-1970 as a speech pathologist for the Kalamazoo Public Schools and then stayed at home raising children for 16 years. In 1986, I returned to the work force as a secretary. I eventually landed in the special education department at WMU, where someone found out that I had a teacher's certificate. Kalamazoo Public Schools gave me a call and enlisted me to substitute for a maternity leave. After substituting for several maternity leaves in a row, I discovered that the field had changed, that I loved working specifically with preschoolers, and went back to WMU for my MA. I continue to work as a speech and language pathologist (long title currently used for speech therapist). My caseload consists entirely of preschoolers. I attempted to retire last year, filing all of the paperwork but in the end faxing a withdrawal as I couldn't imagine my days without these little children.
