MAJ (Ret) Mike Nielsen
Class of 1980
Army, 20+ Years
Served in the Iowa National Guard (as many in my family have) while in college. After graduating from Drake University, went on to complete a successful military career. Originally an Infantry Officer and later a Quartermaster Officer (supply and transportation management) I was able to work with some of the best people in our country and travel to various parts of the world (Korea, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Bosnia). Highlights of my career include being an Infantry Platoon Leader/XO in the 1st Infantry Division, Ft Riley, KS; Commanding a Company in the 101st Airborne Division, Ft Campbell, KY; serving as the Group S4 (Senior Logistics Officer) for the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Ft Carson, CO and all the deployments/"trips" courtesy of the US Government. Various staff and support roles at other locations. Awards included the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal(s) and others and I attribute these to the successful and hard work of not only myself but the senior non-commissioned officers and soldiers I had the opportunity to lead/supervise and train.

Thomas B. Nielsen
Class of 1978
Army, 20+ Years
In a career that totaled 34 years & spanned 5 decades, I was fortunate to see the world up close and personal. I attended numerous schools, met scores of interesting people (thankful for the good ones and resilient in spite of the evil ones), and had tremendous opportunities for travel. I served along the Iron Curtain and saw Check Point Charlie and the Berlin Wall; along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Korea and visited the Peace Tables at Panmunjom; and in the Panama Canal Zone and throughout Central and South America. More recently, I served in Iraq during the height of the Iraqi war - where my skills and beliefs were challenged like never before. I also lost a close friend there and had many experiences that are best forgotten. I thank Atlantic High School for shaping me into a compassionate leader, who always championed the cause of our nation's sons and daughters over himself. As a decorated retiree, I now look back on my service with great satisfaction. I remain a proud Citizen Soldier, an aging Warrior, and always an Atlantic Trojan. Please drop me a line, and let's "BEAT HARLAN!"
