He was born March 6, 1948, in Toledo, to Merlin S. and Agnes H. (Ballard) Schaller. He was preceded in death by his son, Larry J. Schaller II; and brother, Steven Schaller. Larry is also survived by his brother, Thomas Schaller of South Carolina; sister, Brenda Elmers of Millbury; daughter, Melissa Louise Schaller; son, Andrew Lee Diaz; grandchildren, Cody (Annie) Schaller, Curtis Anders, Jonathan (Ashley) Diaz, Brayden Diaz, Oliver Diaz, Shaydow Kitchen-Schaller, Shelby Smith, Wolfgang Smith, Gage Swaisgood, and Jusalyn Swaisgood; and great-grandchildren, Esseynce, Ashlyn, and Oaklee Schaller, Finley Diaz, Tyson and Kolby Williams, and Lila Newcomer. Bowling Green State University. He was in U.S. Army Security Agency from 1972-1975.

He held office on Findlay City Board of Education from 1997-2000.

Larry's body was donated to Ohio State University's Medical College.
