In the mid-1970's, I managed test firing safety and the human factors evaluation for the Cold Regions Test of the XM198 Howitzer. In staff work at the Field Artillery School in the late 1970's, I developed and managed requirements for the battlespace fire-support system (field artillery, mortars, naval gunfire, and close air support), leading the sub-task on architecture of European Theater howitzer ammunition logistics for a postulated mid-'80's high-intensity conflict with Warsaw Pact Forces. In the early 1980's with 1st Armored Division, commanded a medium howitzer battery, and, with 501st Aviation Battalion, I led the Ground Operations sub-task in the extended operational testing and integration of the Army's Stand-Off Target Acquisition System (SOTAS), a precursor (along with the Air Force's "Pave Mover") to the Joint-Surveillance and Target Attack Radar System (J-STARS), which involved the qualification of the system, as well as operational process definition, system integration, and planning for end-user training. At the Army Materiel Command's Natick, Massachusetts laboratories, also in the early 1980's, I co-managed the development and evolution of requirements for individual soldier and mobile command post protection against postulated hazards of a nuclear, chemical, and biologically contaminated battlefield, again, for a European high-intensity conflict environment. I managed liaison with and developed consensus with deployed units of the Army, and managed the Natick contingents that participated in contaminated-battlefield-defeating technology demonstrations with Aberdeen Proving Ground's Human Engineering Laboratory.

What a ride! Almost 39 years (22 active, 17 Reserve) doing many missions from running Search and Rescue boats in the Chesapeake Bay to making Alaskan Fisheries Patrols in the Bearing Sea. Did many years inspecting chemical and petroleum facilities on our waterways and carrying out pollution response and investigation when things went wrong. The absolute best was my last eight years doing International Port Security work around the world (much of it in places that aren't going to make your vacation list) which included six years of living overseas. I wouldn't trade these experiences for anything and would do it all again if they asked me. Kudos to all my fellow veterans whatever your service.
