JV and Middle School Wrestlers

The jv and middle schools wrestlers have been hard at work with practice and traveling to two state qualifying tournaments thus far. One at Hillcrest High and the latest at Lexington High School. The young wrestlers have done well and held their own against their opponents from the larger 4A and 3A schools. Antonio Freeman, Tennison Wells and Dillon Holliday have either finished 1st or 2nd and have qualified for the jv and middle school state championships to be held at the end of the season. Coach Martin has worked hard and invested a lot of time and now is seeing these young guys start to put things together. How much time? This past sat. they left the high school at 6:00am to go to Lexington, almost 700 wrestlers were present. If you are late leaving the tourney it means you are still winning they arrived back at the high school at 1:30am. sunday morning. This is dedication to a sport that is relatively new to Abbeville and most dont understand yet. I say yet, because like football in Abbeville, with a lot of hard work wrestling will also build that tradition.

Panther Wrestling

The panthers varsity wrestling team traveled to BHP on Nov. 28 for a 3 way with BHP and 96 high schools. In the opener Abbeville beat BHP for the first time by a score of 36-35. Connor Lewis, John David Manning, Adam Oaks, Andrew Tillman, Josh Cowan, Beau Sanders, and Bryan Glace registered wins for the panters. In the next match against a strong 96 team the panters fell by a score of 52-21 with Andrew Tillman, Bill Glace, Jonathan Patterson and Joseph Parnell registering wins. Coach Martin is excited about this years team and considering that the program is in its fourth year it should be Coach Martins winningest season to date and he has hopes that multiple wrestlers will qualify for state at the end of the season.
