| Events | Joan Ann Tomkovick (nee Johnston) was born October 4, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended school in North Royalton, Ohio; Granby High School, Norfolk Virginia; and graduated from Zion Benton Township High School, Zion, Illinois in 1952. She earned a Stenographic Certificate from the Gregg Division, School of Business, Northwestern University, Chicago Campus, 1953. She attended Hiram College, Hiram, Ohio, and received a B.A. with majors in English and Business Education From Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois, 1958. She earned an M.A. in Guidance from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois in 1962. Joan worked as a typist for Elbert H. Gary Library , School of Law, Northwestern University, 1953; stenographer, pricing department, Abbott Laboratories, 1953-55; typist, Lake County Highway Department, 1958; business education and English teacher at Grayslake Community High School, Grayslake, IL 1958-61; Business Education teacher and counselor, North Chicago Community High School, North Chicago, Illinois, 1962-65; Employment Counselor, Illinois State Employment Service, 1970-75; services to participants coordinator, Lake County Comprehensive Employment and Training Act, 1975-77. She was a charter member of the College of Lake County Outreach Center Advisory Committee; original team of Senior Workers for the Lake County Telephone Crisis Service, CONTACT; served as community representative for NEED (North Chicago Equal Education Development Committee); North Chicago Co-Chairman for Get-Out-The-Vote, Lake County Area Vocational School; founder and charter member of North Chicago Rotary Club Auxiliary "Rotary Anns" and serve as president, 1976-76; member of Scholarship, Insurance, and Legislative Advocacy Committees for Lake County Retired Teachers Association. Joan was a member of the American Association for Counseling and Development, National Employment Counselors Association, Illinois Guidance and Personnel association, Chicago Area Business Education Association, American Legion Sharvin Post Auxiliary, First Christian Church, Holy Family Church, and St. Dismas Church. She is survived by cousins, Carolyn Jeremiah, Robert Wixon, and Ruth Murphy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Roy and Margaret Louise (nee Ramsey) Johnston; husband, Stanley Tomkovick; cousins; John Miller, Samuel Miller Jr., Stephen Creath, Joy Johnston, and John Johnston lll. Joan Tomkovick's body has been donated to the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois for study at Northwestern Medical School. Her cremains will be interred at Owl Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Berlin Township, Ankenytown, Ohio. Arrangements are being entrusted to Gurnee Salata Funeral Home in Gurnee, IL and Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
