Events | Charles Joseph Sueppel, 93, of South Bend, Indiana passed away peacefully, Saturday, October 19, 2024, in Dujarie House. Charles was born in Chicago, Illinois to Carl and Myra (Mills) Sueppel. He graduated from Zion-Benton High School in Zion, Illinois. Charles was a 1954 graduate of Bradley University where he participated in ROTC. After college Charles served in the United States Air Force in Strategic Air Command attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He retired from the Air Force after 5 years and joined the Reserves where he attained the rank of Captain. Charles retired as a foreman at US Steel South Works, South Chicago, Illinois and then worked as a Security Officer at St. Margaret's Hospital in Hammond, Indiana and Mercy Hospital in Dyer, Indiana. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Shirley (Odorizzi) Sueppel; his children, Brian (Becky) Sueppel of Grafton, Wisconsin, Joanne (Stephen) Hartman of South Bend, Indiana and Michael (Tammy) Sueppel of Wheatfield, Indiana; five grandchildren, Madalyn (Riley) Falk, Eric (Stacy Davis) Hartman, Karen (Jackson Hicks) Sueppel, Bradley (Haley) Hartman and Sgt. Kyle Hartman, USMC; two step-grandchildren, Joshua (Katie) VanSchoyck and Chloe Lower; two great-grandchildren, Wesley Hartman-Davis and Caysen Hartman; and three nieces, Donna Daniels, Cheryl Hill and Laura Hetherington. Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Marion Casa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 26, 2024 in Christ the King Catholic Church. A visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the church. Chuck participated in community service at his former parish Our Lady Knock Church in Calument City, Illinois. He volunteered at Sunday meals, assisted at the Homeless Shelter, Friday night bingo and maintenance when needed. Chuck was a sports fanatic from his love for all Chicago teams to cheering on the Irish after moving to South Bend. He loved playing sports, especially basketball in high school and coaching his sons in grade school and little league. Chuck was the biggest fan of his children and grandchildren as he watched them excel in their sport. He never hesitated to remind the officials about a missed call. Chuck loved to vacation at Silver Lake in Michigan and climbed the dunes into his eighties. He leaves that legacy of love to his children and grandchildren. The family would like to express their most sincere appreciation to the Dujarie House staff for the care and kindness given to Chuck during the last months of his life.
