About Mark W. Schlagel, age 64, was a resident of McHenry for 20 years, formerly of Zion, IL. He graduated in 1977 from Zion Benton High School, where he was a member of the Cross Country Team for 4 years. He attended College of Lake County, DePaul University and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale Illinois.
 
Mark was the beloved brother of Konni (Scot) Derreberry of Milton, GA; a loving uncle to Ryan Derreberry of Sandy Springs GA and nephew of Gerry Ward of Cottage Hills, IL. He will also be missed by several cousins and close friends.
 
Mark was born December 30, 1958, to the late Warren and Evelyn (Becker) Schlagel. His Grandparents were Herbert and Hanna (Rudolph) Schlagel of Albert Lea MN and George and Florence (McComsey) Becker of Zion. Mark Passed away Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Wauconda Care.
 
Mark’s banking career started at the Bank of Zion, where he worked after high school. After College, he was employed at Fifth Third Bank and was a Branch Manager at several of their local banks. He retired from Home State Bank after receiving a Cancer Diagnosis of Pleural Mesothelioma.

Mark had a Great love for the Chicago Black Hawks Hockey team. He also followed the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox. He never missed watching a game and could Quote the stats for any player on any US Sports team if asked.

A Celebration of Life was held in the early June of 2024.
