About PLAIN TOWNSHIP: A booming voice and a very memorable, strong grip were stilled on November 24, 2016, 4 days after Carl J. "Dutch" Clapper celebrated his 90th birthday with his loving family. Carl was born in Zanesville, Ohio on November 20, 1926 to the late Llewellyn and Clara Madinger Clapper. He left high school (where he was a star football player) to serve in the US Navy during WWII. Following his tour, with the US Navy he returned to Zanesville to complete his education and graduated from Lash High School in 1946. Dutch retired in 1987 as Superintendent of Motor Vehicles for the City of Canton. In retirement Dutch taught himself woodcarving and specialized in Santas and wildlife. He attended many seminars in Branson, Missouri (all with his wife, and even a few with his 3 daughters) at the Woodcarving Rendezvous. Dutch was a member of the National Woodcarvers Association and the Hall of Fame Woodcarvers. Preceded in death by his brother, Frank Clapper and sister, Frances Grubb. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years JoAnn Clapper (nee Mechaney); daughters Susan (fiance Robert Broffman) Fryberger, Carlee Adams (Bill) Gulledge and Cathleen (Joseph) Clifford; grandchildren Jefferson Donato, Toni Donato (Paul) Shade, Christopher Adams and Cate-lyn Adams (Austin) Kelley; great grandchildren Tori-Jo (Corey) Benoit, Taylor, Tessa and Amelia Shade, Cayla, Thomas Adams and Ava Adams Kelley; great, great grandson Xander Benoit; sisters-in-law Judy Ecrement, Jody Safreed, and Jennifer Gates; many other loving family and friends.
