About	CHARLESTON, WV: Willard H. (Bill) Smith, former Charleston Daily Mail sports editor, died quietly at home Saturday, February 6, 2010. Bill was born in Zanesville, Ohio, September 7, 1929, the son of Ellen Cecelia Warne Smith and Hugh Dallas Smith. Bill graduated from Lash High School in 1947 and entered the Navy in 1948. He served during the Korean conflict mainly in Fort Lauderville, FL, where he was a member of a hurricane hunting squadron. Bill received a MS degree in Public Relations and History from Ohio University; and a BS in Journalism, also from OU. Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Lou Hagley Smith and their four children: Leslie (Richard) Raney, James Hugh (Lisa Salamie) Smith, Galen Patrick (Karen Plowden) Smith, and Jon Kevin (Cherie Hill) Smith. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Carise (Brendan) O'Brien, Olivia Ellen Raney, Jacqueline Elise Raney, Natalie Anastasia Raney, Emily Louise Raney, Carson Alexander Smith, Cameron Andrew Smith, Celia Ellen Smith, and Jon Kevin Smith, Jr. He is survived by one great-grandson, Judah Benjamin Raney. Bill will also be missed by his dog, Gigi, his constant companion for the past five years.
