About Dr. Don "Doc" Smith, 78, of Zanesville, died at 4:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 6, 1931 in Zanesville, the son of the late Emmett J. Smith and Bonnie Williams Smith.

He was a life-long resident of Zanesville. He graduated from Zanesville High School and The Ohio State University, and The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1960. He then opened his veterinary clinic in Zanesville, and practiced in the same location for 50 years. Member of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, The Ohio State Veterinary Alumni Association, NRA, Ducks Unlimited, Lafayette Honor Lodge # 726, and The American Quarter Horse Association.

He raised quarter horses, which he enjoyed showing and racing. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping all of his life.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jackie Smith; seven children, Laura Stanford, Karen Smith, Mike (Carolyn) Smith DVM, John (Bobbie) Smith, Bonnie Smith (Jeff Cooper), Mary Smith DVM, and Beth (Matt) Stevens; ten grandchildren, Laurel Palmer, Rebeca Stanford, Robby Stanford, Emily Ellwood, Molly Ellwood, Eric Smith, Ed Smith, Eryn Smith, Hannah Cooper, and Gabriella Stevens; a sister, Alice Moody; a brother, Ralph (Diane) Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett & Bonnie Smith; a brother and best friend, Richard Smith; and a brother-in-law, Charles B. Moody.

Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. on Friday, January 22, 2010 at William Thompson & Son Funeral Home, 5765 Gladstone Dr, White Cottage, OH. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, at the funeral home with his nephew, Doug Moody officiating. There will be a private family burial at his home farm.
