Mr. Smith was born July 15, 1921, in Zanesville, Ohio, the youngest of nine sons born to Anna Hoobing Smith and Harry Howard Smith. He graduated from Lash High School in 1939.

He received his BA from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1943, then served in the U.S. Army at the Presidio in San Francisco, California.
