About | Charles “Charlie” Thomas Stewart Jr., 81, of Zanesville, passed away peacefully at 12:01 P.M. on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at Genesis Hospital surrounded by his beloved family. Born January 26, 1944, in Columbus, Ohio, Charlie was the son of the late Charles Thomas Stewart Sr. and Eleanor Ludman Tanner Stewart. He is survived by his wife Janet Kay Haines Stewart whom he married September 19, 1998; children Charles Chadwick Stewart (Liza); Lisa Stewart Koney (James); Stephanie Goodrich Harris (James), and Bethany Goodrich Economus (Basil); grandchildren Caitlin and Abigail Koney; Trey (Katelyn) and Olivia (Dylan) Harris; George, Mimi and Oliver Economus; great-grandchildren Blair and Cooper Harris, brother William T. Stewart (Jennifer); and nieces and nephews Brian Stewart, Amy Stewart Smith, Allison Stewart Barasz, Jessica Stewart Clem and David Stewart. He is predeceased by his grandson, Cameron Koney and the mother of his son Charles and daughter Lisa, Suzanne Brown Stewart. After playing college football & lacrosse, and graduating from Denison University, he spent his entire career leading his family business, Stewart Glapat Corporation. Taking the reins upon tremendous uncertainty after the sudden passing of his father in 1978, his fearless leadership built the company into the Material Handling Empire that you see today. Not only did he turn Stewart Glapat into a winner, he also generously sponsored countless sports teams who brought hundreds of championship trophies back to Zanesville, OH. He was nominated to be Chairman of every single Board he ever served on, a testament to his legendary ability to make decisions. He received the 2017 Dick Johnson Civic Leadership Award from the Muskingum County Community Foundation. Charlie was a larger-than-life figure in the Zanesville community, known for his years as the legendary coach of the North Bears. A proud class of 1962 alum of Zanesville High School, he helped found the ZHS Quarterback Club, and was a longtime donor to many ZHS athletic programs. Beyond work and sports, Charlie found joy on the golf course — especially at Zanesville Country Club and Pinehurst No. 9. He was a two-time president of the Zanesville Country Club and an instrumental figure in the success and growth of ZCC. When Charlie believed in you, you knew it. His devotion to Zanesville was not just a matter of pride — it was the very foundation of how he lived his life. His friendships ran deep, and he was rarely without a loyal circle of companions who cherished his quick wit, unshakable loyalty, and larger-than-life personality. He believed in his community, and his community believed in him. Charlie was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance from 1:00 to 3:00 PM on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at Bryan & Hardwick Funeral Home, with a funeral service following at 3:00 PM, officiated by Pastor Tara Mitchell. In honor of Charlie’s lifelong dedication to local sports, memorial contributions may be made to Zanesville Athletics, c/o Zanesville High School, 1701 Blue Ave., Zanesville, OH 43701. |
