About | Bessie “Bess” Lee Hittle, 85, of Dresden, died Thursday morning, May 16, 2024, at Altercare Zanesville with her husband by her side. Born on May 29, 1938, in Zanesville, Bess was the daughter of the late William and Claris (Moore) McCutcheon. A 1956 graduate of Zanesville High School, she devoted herself to homemaking. Her passion for gardening extended to cultivating fruits and vegetables, which she skillfully transformed into delicious home-cooked meals and desserts. Bess's specialty was baking apple pies and preserving produce from her garden. Her lifestyle was marked by activity, from engaging in line dancing and water aerobics to enjoying music. Over the years, she transitioned from being a 4-H member to serving as an advisor for many years and providing leadership throughout Muskingum County. Among her many accomplishments, Bess took immense pride in her involvement with her church. As a dedicated member of the Dresden United Methodist Church, she contributed to meal preparations, sang in the choir, and held leadership positions including the esteemed position of past president of the United Methodist Women. Surviving is her loving husband of 66 years, Loren “Max” Hittle, whom she married May 26, 1957; three children, Scott (Susan) Hittle, Bonnie (Glenn) Gamary, and D.J. Hittle; four grandchildren, Jarrod (Ashley) Hittle, Justin (Brie) Hittle, Kirsten Gamary, and Delanie (Jason) Rock; five great grandchildren, Ayla, Alair, Quentin, Shepard, and Emmett; two sisters-in-laws, Kathleen and Sylvia McCutcheon and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her nine siblings, Bill, Joe, Josie, Sally, Peggy, Helen, Glenn, Wanda, and Eddie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial contribution that will provide scholarships to local 4-H members. Contributions may be made to the Muskingum County 4-H Endowment Fund at The Ohio State University Foundation, PO Box 710811, Columbus, OH 43271 or give online at go.osu.edu/musk4hendowment.
