About Bernard "Bernie" L. Wheeler, 83, of Zanesville, died at 7:05 A.M. on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 17, 1940, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, son of the late Arthur and Stella (Patterson) Wheeler. Bernie was a self-employed business owner of Wheeler's HYD, he was a member of Claysville Methodist Church, the Amrou Grotto Prophets Park No. 45 and Gauge and Gavel No. 448 of Chandlersville. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Zanesville after serving his country for 20 years in the United States Navy, where he was an elite member of the "silent" service submarine service. He enjoyed woodworking, golf, and cheering for The Ohio State Buckeyes.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Kay (Stiers) Wheeler whom he married November 15, 1958; two sons, Douglas (Lisa) Wheeler and Dan (Deborah) Wheeler; grandchildren, Adam (Hillary) Wheeler, Nathan (Heather) Wheeler, Justin Wheeler, Patrick (Bethany) Wheeler; great grandchildren, Rory and Zinnia Wheeler and Elijah, Josiah, Isiah and Nehemiah Wheeler; and special second cousins, Sandy (Bill) Myers and Pam (Dwight) Robinson.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his sister Sandra Kay Wheeler.
Friends and family may call from 3:00-5:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE, with Grotto Services to be held at 4:45 P.M. with full Military Honors accorded to him by the United States Navy in conjunction with the VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and the American Legion Color Guard Post 29 following Grotto service on the lawn.
