About New Albany - Derwood Vernon Berry, age 83, of Zanesville, loving father and grandfather, passed away April 14, 2021 at Wesley Woods of New Albany after an extended illness. Derwood was born March 8, 1938, in Zanesville, husband of the late Kathryn E. (Ball) Berry, and son of the late Emmit D. and Mildred V. (Dickson) Berry. He enjoyed spending time with his family, working in his garage, caring for his yard, taking vacations to Hilton Head Island, and supporting local charities such as The Carr Center and The Salvation Army.

Derwood was a Graduate of Zanesville High School in 1956. He was very proud to serve his country as a member of the United States Army and was stationed at various bases in the United States as well as in Germany. After his military service concluded, he worked at McGraw Edison for over 25 years. He and Kathryn then started their own business, Der Ver Ber Distributors, and operated it for 29 years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church serving as an usher for many years. He was also a member of Lodge of Amity #5 F & AM, Amrou Grotto, Aladdin Shriner, Valley of Cambridge Scottish Rite, and the American Legion.

He is survived by his son Bruce (Barbara) Berry; grandchildren, Patrick and Kaitlin; sister, Melanie (Gary) Weaver; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Larry) Saben; brother-in-law, David (Jeanne) Ball; and many special nieces and nephews.

Friends and family may call from 11:30 A.M. until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 116 North 7th Street, Zanesville, with Vicar Robert Eller officiating. He will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery, Zanesville where full Military Honors will be accorded to him by the United States Army in conjunction with the VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and the American Legion Post 29.
