Howie was one of my best friends. He lived directly behind us, so we grew up together. We were both in the band and roomed together at Western Michigan University. We then served in the Army band together. He was the best man at our wedding in 1969. He worked for our family-owned business, Marlee Produce Co., for several years before going over to Spartan Stores. I lost track of him when we moved to Washington and was shocked when I learned of his untimely death.
