Karen and I were best friends in high school and occasionally our paths crossed over the years. We really became close again around 2003 when Karen joined my husband Danny Shapiro and me in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota for a stay on pristine Gunflint Lake. "Abse" always had irreverent humor and we were both delighted by our rediscovered friendship. She was coming to NYC to see my dance company, Shapiro & Smith Dance, perform at The Joyce Theater in January of 2006. It was strange I had not heard from her. A few months later I was sent a program from her memorial. The photo on the cover was one Danny took when we were all together at Gunflint Lake. Danny was 47 at that time and dealing with stage 4 cancer. He didn't tell me Karen had died though he knew before our NYC dance concert. I don't know if he was protecting me or himself but I found out about Karen by opening her memorial program. Karen was an incredibly experienced river outfitter and died scouting the way ahead for a kayak group on The James River. I still miss her and wish we could have continued a friendship than would have now spanned more than 55 years.
