July 7, 1940—May 8, 2010 John W. Hartman, a retired Williamsville teacher and coach who also was a standout football player in his day, died Saturday in the Center for Hospice&Palliative Care, Cheektowaga. He was 69. Known as Jack, Mr. Hartman was born in Buffalo and was a graduate of Cleveland Hill High School, where he was an award-winning tackle on the football team. His achievement in athletics was recognized with his induction in the Cleveland Hill Hall of Fame. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of Buffalo. While there, he played football from 1959 to 1961, playing in the Gem City Bowl, a college bowl game played in Erie, Pa. Mr. Hartman taught physical education at the Heim and Casey middle schools for 35 years. He coached varsity football, as well as track and field, at Williamsville North High School. He was a line coach when Williamsville High School’s football team won a division championship in 1962. While coaching at Williamsville North, the boys track and field team also won division championships in two successive years. Mr. Hartman was named coach of the year at Williamsville North in 1985. He was on the coaching staff when Williamsville North’s varsity football team went undefeated and won the division championship in 1996. He later became a professor at UB, teaching courses in coaching and fitness, and an assistant track and field/cross country coach. He retired in 1997. Mr. Hartman was an active parishioner at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and a member of UB’s Alumni Association and the Blue and White Club. He served as a basketball referee and track official for the Erie County Interscholastic Conference. He also volunteered at the World University Games, Special Olympics and Gus Macker Basketball, and was an advocate for youth athletics. Mr. Hartman enjoyed golfing and was a former board member at Lancaster Country Club. Survivors include his wife, the former Patricia Meyer; three daughters, Sandra Lorenzo, Deborah Romaneo and Cynthia Paladino; and a brother, Robert. Services will be at 10 a. m. Thursday in St. John Lutheran Church, Clinton Street and Union Road. |

I saw Coach Hartman at an event at North around 2008. My sister and I had him for gym at Maple Elementary, so we ‘ran’ up to him asked if we could go on the trampoline!!!
