Sam Marullo
Class of 1972
Sam Marullo, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at Georgetown University. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Center for Social Justice at Georgetown University.
Marullo served as Director and President of the Board of Directors of the Washington D.C. Community Research and Learning (CoRAL) Network from 2000-2006 and helped to create the network with the support of grants from the Bonner Foundation, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Meyer Foundation. The CoRAL Network is a consortium of seven Washington area universities and colleges and numerous community based organizations (CBOs) which have been involved in collaborative, community based research to address the social change needs of the CBOs.
Marullo served as the Director of the Volunteer and Public Service Center at Georgetown University from 1997-2000. He was a co-principle investigator on Georgetown's Community Outreach Partnership Center grant, 1999-2002. He was principle investigator on a Bonner Foundation grant to promote community-based research, first at Georgetown and then in the District of Columbia, which led to the creation of the CoRAL Network. He was also a founding member of the University's Partners in Urban Research and Service-learning initiative, which was a community-university seminar whose purpose was to initiate research projects developed to meet community priorities. He is a member of the Campus Compact’s Consulting Corps, organized to provide university consultations to promote civic engagement, service-learning, and community-based research. Sam has authored or co-authored several books and many articles about community-based sociological research, as well as reviews of US peace movements over the past several decades.
